How Is Consolidated Shipping Cost Calculated? Formula, Rates & 10 Money-Saving Tips

3 Core Shipping Cost Formulas

Consolidated shipping cost = chargeable weight × per-kg rate. Chargeable weight is whichever is larger between "actual weight" and "volumetric weight." Volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) ÷ 10,000 (large sea-freight items instead use cai units, ÷28,316).

① Volumetric Weight (Most Important)

Volumetric weight (kg) = length (cm) × width (cm) × height (cm) ÷ 10,000

Example: for a 50×40×30cm box, volumetric weight = 60,000 ÷ 10,000 = 6 kg. HowBridge uses ÷10,000 for sea-express and air freight; large sea-freight items are instead calculated in cai units: length × width × height (cm) ÷ 28,316.

② Chargeable Weight

Chargeable weight = MAX (actual weight, volumetric weight)

Billing uses whichever is larger between actual and volumetric weight — this is why the cost of light-but-bulky items (large volume, low weight) is so often underestimated.

③ Total Shipping Cost

Total cost = chargeable weight × per-kg rate (+ delivery fee if under 10 kg)

Sea-express NT$50/unit, air freight NT$100/kg, sea LCL consolidation from NT$25/kg or NT$150/cu ft (quote-based); for shipments under 10 kg, sea-express adds NT$100 and air freight adds NT$120 in delivery fees — waived once you reach 10 kg.

The larger the volumetric divisor, the lower the calculated volumetric weight — and the better it is for you. When comparing consolidators, check the divisor along with the per-kg rate, not the rate alone.

Rate Comparison for 4 Shipping Services

HowBridge offers four shipping services, and all rates are published on the rate page. If you see different per-kg prices, check which service they refer to first — it's not a case of old vs. new pricing.

Sea LCL Consolidation (Bulk Cargo)From NT$25/kg or NT$150/cu ft7–14 daysPriced by CBM / cai (÷28,316); quoted by customer service based on your items
  • Delivery fee under 10 kg: sea-express adds NT$100, air freight adds NT$120; waived once you reach 10 kg.
  • Same price for regular and special cargo: sensitive items like lithium batteries and cosmetics are not charged extra.
  • No minimum spend: small packages never lose their rate advantage to a minimum-order fee.

The actual shipping cost is determined by the system calculation at the time of shipment; before ordering, you can estimate the total with the shipping cost calculator.

Shipping Cost Calculation Examples

Two typical scenarios, worked through with the formulas and rates above (both are sea-express / air express, using the ÷10,000 volumetric divisor).

Example A: Light but Bulky (Storage Boxes, Puffy Clothing)

  • Package size: 50×40×30cm
  • Actual weight: 1.5 kg
  • Volumetric weight = 60,000 ÷ 10,000 = 6 kg
  • Chargeable weight = MAX(1.5, 6) = 6 kg (billed by volume)
Sea-express cost = 6 × NT$50 + delivery fee NT$100 = NT$400
Air freight cost = 6 × NT$100 + delivery fee NT$120 = NT$720

For light-but-bulky items, sea-express saves about 44% over air freight, while still arriving in 5–10 days.

Example B: Heavy but Compact (Supplements, Metal Parts)

  • Package size: 20×15×15cm
  • Actual weight: 4 kg
  • Volumetric weight = 4,500 ÷ 10,000 = 0.45 kg
  • Chargeable weight = MAX(4, 0.45) = 4 kg (billed by actual weight)
Sea-express cost = 4 × NT$50 + delivery fee NT$100 = NT$300
Air freight cost = 4 × NT$100 + delivery fee NT$120 = NT$520

Heavy, compact items are billed by actual weight, so the volumetric formula barely matters — choosing sea-express or air freight comes down to how fast you need it.

For bulk items over 10 kg, furniture, and appliances, use sea LCL consolidation instead: from NT$25/kg or NT$150/cu ft, billed by CBM / cai, quoted by customer service based on your items — this page does not calculate a total cost for those.

Air, Sea-Express, or Sea Freight — Which Should You Choose?

For most packages, sea-express is the best value; for light, small items you need quickly, choose air freight; for bulk items over 10 kg, furniture, and appliances, use the sea freight line.

Oversized item note: for a single item over 10 cai or 40 kg, Taiwan-side home delivery carries an additional oversize fee (tiered by county/city and cai / weight) — confirm with customer service before ordering.

Consolidation Rules & Free Services

"Consolidation" is the biggest money-saving lever in shipping — multiple orders arrive at the warehouse over time, get packed together, and are billed once based on the combined weight/volume.

Free Services & Warehouse Handling
  • Consolidation and packing: Free.
  • 366 days of storage: Free — wait for multiple orders to arrive before shipping, at no extra cost.
  • Photo inspection on arrival: You can request photos of items on arrival to check them before deciding to forward them (contact customer service for details).
Consolidation Precautions
  • Liquids (cosmetics, cleaning products) and food are best packed in separate boxes to avoid leaks and contamination.
  • For fragile items like glass and ceramics, note that you would like reinforced packaging, and consider boxing them separately.
  • For BSMI-regulated items (plug-in electronics and appliances), add a note so it matches your customs paperwork.

10 Practical Money-Saving Tips

Every tip below builds directly on the formulas and rates above — you can put them into practice right away.

Wait and Consolidate Before Shipping

Let packages you order over time sit in the warehouse (366 days free storage), then consolidate them all at once: the delivery fee is charged only once, it is waived entirely once the combined weight hits 10 kg, and you only need to complete EZWay real-name verification once.

💰 Zero delivery fee + single delivery

Always Choose Sea-Express for Light-but-Bulky Items

Bulky, lightweight items are billed by volume, and air freight's per-kg rate is double that of sea-express. For the same storage box in Example A: sea-express NT$400 vs. air freight NT$720.

💰 Saves about 44%

Ask the Seller to Ship Furniture Flat-Packed

Shipping cost is based on volume, and pre-assembled furniture mostly ships air. Ask the seller to send it flat-packed (knock-down panels) instead — the volume drops sharply, and so does the cost.

💰 Savings scale directly with the volume reduction

Buy During Mainland China's Big Sales

Discounts are deepest during 618, 11.11, and 12.12. Combine them with 366 days of free storage to build up your order gradually, then consolidate into one shipment — saving on both the product price and the shipping cost.

💰 Product discounts + shipping cost spread across a consolidated shipment

Plan for Sea-Express / Sea Freight from the Start for Lithium Batteries and Liquids

Items containing lithium batteries cannot be shipped by air under aviation dangerous-goods rules, and liquids and cosmetics face restrictions too. Plan for sea-express or sea freight from the outset to avoid having to change your order midway. HowBridge charges the same price for regular and special cargo, so sensitive items are not marked up.

💰 Zero markup on sensitive items

Understand the NT$2,000 Duty-Free Threshold — Do Not Try to "Split Orders"

A dutiable value under NT$2,000 is exempt from customs duty and business tax — but this is a "threshold," not an "allowance": go over it, and the entire amount is taxed, not just the portion above NT$2,000. And if you import more than 6 times within six months, customs may deny the exemption altogether. Deliberately splitting an order into smaller shipments to dodge this can backfire — customs can combine them and tax the total, which is not worth the risk.

💰 Avoids back taxes and penalties

Measure the Volume Before You Order

Light-but-bulky items are the easiest to underestimate: storage boxes, puffy jackets, strollers, long slim sports gear. Plug the package dimensions into the volumetric formula before ordering, and your shipping budget stays accurate.

💰 Keeps your budget accurate

Reach 10 kg to Waive the Delivery Fee

At 9 kg, sea-express costs NT$450 + NT$100 delivery fee = NT$550; but reaching 10 kg actually costs only NT$500. When you are just short of the threshold, adding one more small item saves you money.

💰 Saves NT$100–120 in delivery fees

Reinforce Fragile Items and Film Yourself Unboxing

HowBridge does not currently offer declared-value insurance (cargo transport insurance); compensation standard: a lost parcel is compensated up to three times the shipping fee paid for that parcel; breakage of fragile or battery-containing items is not compensated; other damage is assessed case by case. Prevention beforehand matters more than claims after the fact: note that fragile items need reinforcement, box them separately, and film yourself unboxing the package the moment it arrives.

💰 Risk management — avoids major losses

Use the Official Calculator to Work Out the "True Landed Cost"

Do not compare prices by per-kg rate alone: use the shipping cost calculator together with the tax calculator covering 12,000+ CCC tariff codes to work out "shipping cost + delivery fee + tax" all at once — that is your true total cost.

💰 Helps you avoid costly mistakes

Frequently Asked Questions About Consolidated Shipping Cost

Q1. Why is a 1 kg package charged as if it were 3 kg?
Because the volumetric weight is greater than the actual weight. For example, a 50×30×20cm box with an actual weight of 1 kg has a volumetric weight of 30,000÷10,000=3 kg, so it is billed at MAX(actual, volumetric)=3 kg. This is standard practice across the logistics industry, preventing large, light items from taking up cargo space while only paying a light-item rate. When comparing consolidators, check the volumetric divisor too — the larger it is, the better for you.
Q2. How heavy can a single sea freight item be? Can furniture and appliances be shipped?
Yes. The sea freight line is billed by CBM / cai (length × width × height in cm ÷ 28,316) and quoted by customer service based on your items — furniture and appliances can both be shipped this way. Note: for a single item over 10 cai or 40 kg, Taiwan-side home delivery carries an additional oversize fee, so confirm with customer service before shipping.
Q3. Do "special" items like cosmetics and lithium batteries cost extra?
No. HowBridge charges the same price for regular and special cargo — sensitive items like lithium batteries and cosmetics are not marked up. However, these items cannot be shipped by air; use sea-express or sea freight instead.
Q4. Is consolidation really free?
Yes. Consolidation and packing are free, and storage is free for 366 days. Once items arrive, you can also request photos to check them before deciding what to do. All fees are listed transparently before shipment — no minimum spend, no hidden charges.
Q5. Can I still return an item after it is shipped to Taiwan?
It is very difficult. A cross-border return requires paying for international shipping all over again and involves tax refund procedures, so it usually is not worth it. Recommendations: request a photo inspection when items arrive at the warehouse, split high-value items across multiple shipments to spread the risk, and check product reviews carefully before ordering.
Q6. How are import taxes collected? Is tax included in the shipping cost?
Shipping cost does not include import taxes. Taxes are declared accurately per the CCC tariff schedule and are the recipient's responsibility, collected in cash by the delivery carrier (HCT Logistics) on arrival. A dutiable value under NT$2,000 is exempt from customs duty and business tax (customs may deny the exemption for imports over 6 times within six months). You can estimate the amount with the tax calculator before ordering.
