What Is EZWay, and Why Is It Required?

OfficialEZWay is the real-name verification app for express cargo imports launched by Taiwan's Customs Administration, Ministry of Finance. Since 2020, recipients of all express import shipments must complete EZWay real-name verification; otherwise, parcels cannot clear customs.

What happens if EZWay is not installed?
  • The parcel remains at customs and cannot be released
  • Storage fees may accrue at about NT$50-100 per day
  • Unresolved shipments may be treated as abandoned after 30 days
  • Return shipping fees are borne by the cargo owner

Therefore, the first required step before consolidating Taobao, Pinduoduo, or 1688 parcels back to Taiwan is installing EZWay. Once it is set up, receiving parcels becomes much smoother.

Finish Registration in 3 Minutes

1Open the app and tap "Register New Account"

After downloading and opening the app for the first time, you will see Login and Register New Account buttons. First-time users should tap Register New Account.

2Enter personal information

You will need:
1. National ID number for Taiwan citizens, or ARC number for foreign residents
2. Name, matching the ID document
3. Mobile phone number, a Taiwan number beginning with 09 that can receive a verification code
4. Email address

3Set a password

Password rule: 8-16 characters, including uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. The password must be changed periodically, so we recommend saving it in a password manager such as 1Password or Bitwarden.

4Verify by SMS code

The system sends a 4- to 6-digit SMS verification code to your phone. Enter it to complete registration. Mainland China and overseas phone numbers cannot receive the code; a Taiwan phone number is required.

5 Steps for Real-Name Verification

Registration is only the first step. To clear customs, you must complete real-name verification by linking your identity document:

  1. Log in to the EZWay app and tap Member Area at the bottom
  2. Tap "I want real-name verification"
  3. Use the phone camera to photograph the front and back of the ID, making sure the image is clear, glare-free, and includes all four corners
  4. Complete face recognition with the camera, such as blinking, turning your head, or smiling as instructed
  5. Submit for review; approval usually takes 1-3 business days, and the app sends a notification after review
After approval: your ID number is linked to Customs. Each time an express import shipment arrives later, the system automatically pushes a notice to the app, and you only need to tap "Confirm Declaration." Verification is normally required only once.
Common reasons verification fails:
  • ID photo is blurry or has glare
  • Face recognition lighting is insufficient
  • Name was entered incorrectly, including character or conversion errors
  • The ID document has expired
When a submission is rejected, the app explains the reason. Retake and resubmit; there is no fixed retry limit.

How to Confirm a Declaration After Receiving a Parcel Notice

When your parcel ships out and arrives at Taiwan customs, EZWay sends a push notification. The process is:

1Receive an app push notification

The title is similar to "You have 1 import parcel pending confirmation." A backup email is usually also sent to the registered email address.

2Open the Pending Confirmation list in the app

It shows sender, product name, quantity, amount, CCC tariff code, and estimated taxes. Check carefully that it is your parcel. If it appears to be identity misuse, you may reject it.

3Tap "Confirm Declaration"

After confirming the data is correct, tap the green Confirm Declaration button. The system sends the data to Customs.

4Wait for customs release

After confirmation, Customs usually releases the parcel within 1-24 hours. Duty-free parcels under NT$2,000 are processed automatically. If the duty-free threshold is exceeded, tax payment is required and the app provides a payment link for online card payment or ATM transfer.

Declaration confirmation deadline: Customs commonly allows confirmation within 7 days. If it is not confirmed in time, the parcel may be returned or destroyed. Turn on both app push and email notifications for backup.

Forgot Password or Changed Phones?

Forgot password

On the login page, tap Forgot Password -> enter national ID number and registered phone number -> receive verification code -> reset password. It can usually be completed within 10 minutes.

Mobile phone number changed

What if the new number cannot receive the verification code? There are two options:

  • Online application: log in to the EZWay website at webcheck.ezway.cc with your ID and old password, then change the phone number in Personal Information
  • In-person counter: bring your ID to Taoyuan Airport Customs or the nearest Customs branch office and fill out the change form

Visit a Customs counter to handle ID replacement and EZWay re-verification. It usually takes 1 business day.

Common Errors and Fixes

Error: "Unable to receive SMS verification code"

1. Confirm the phone is a Taiwan number beginning with 09, not a mainland China or overseas number. 2. Confirm SMS is not blocked by carrier filtering. 3. Wait 5 minutes and try again, because the system may be delayed.

Error: "ID has already been used"

This means the same ID has already registered for EZWay. Possible reasons: 1. you registered before and forgot, so use Forgot Password; 2. a family member registered for you, so ask them for the login; 3. the ID was misused, in which case call 0800-026-090 to file a complaint.

Error: "Real-name verification has not passed after 3 days"

Call EZWay support at (02) 2550-5500 ext. 2976 and provide your ID and registered phone number for inquiry. Delays are often caused by unclear photos.

Error: "No app push notification received and parcel remains stuck"

1. Check whether push notifications are disabled for EZWay in iOS or Android settings. 2. Log in to the app directly and check the Pending Confirmation list. 3. Also check the registered email address, including spam.

Q1. Will a parcel really be returned if EZWay is not installed?
Yes. Since May 16, 2020, Taiwan's Ministry of Finance Customs Administration has required all express imports to pass EZWay real-name verification before customs clearance. Without it, the parcel may remain at customs and be returned or destroyed after 30 days, with return costs borne by the cargo owner. Install it before your first consolidated shipment.
Q2. Can foreigners without a Taiwan national ID apply for EZWay?
Yes. Foreign residents with an ARC can register with their ARC number. Requirements: 1. ARC valid for at least 6 more months. 2. Taiwan mobile phone number. 3. Chinese or English name matching the ARC. The process is the same as for Taiwan citizens.
Q3. Can I reverse an EZWay declaration after confirming it?
No. Once confirmed, the data is sent to Customs and cannot be withdrawn in the app. If you discover an error, such as a parcel that is not yours or an incorrect product declaration, immediately call Customs support at 0800-026-090 to file a complaint. Always check sender and product name before confirming.
Q4. How many times per year can one EZWay account be used?
There is no fixed usage limit. However, if the same ID imports an unusually high number of shipments in one year, such as more than 10 times per month, Customs may consider it a possible commercial import pattern. Later shipments may lose the duty-free threshold and be fully taxed. Small, repeated personal-use shipments are generally acceptable; large quantities of the same item will be taxed.
Q5. Can one ID register two EZWay accounts?
No. One ID number can only correspond to one EZWay account. If multiple family members use consolidation, each person should register individually and each should have their own Taiwan phone number. Sharing one account violates the principle of real-name verification.
Q6. EZWay shows estimated tax of NT$XXX. Can I refuse to pay?
You can refuse to receive the parcel, in which case it is returned to the seller and you bear the freight loss. If the tax amount itself is disputed, use the objection process: file with Customs within 30 days and attach formal invoice, product photos, and CCC code comparison proof. Overpaid taxes may be refunded; underpaid taxes must be paid.
