The Complete BBQ Grill Guide: Grill Types, Brands & Import Taxes
HowBridge does not currently offer or operate any United States-to-Taiwan freight forwarding, purchasing-agent, or payment-agent service. The service does not currently exist, and there is no usable U.S. or Oregon warehouse address, no official rates, and no guaranteed transit times. Any warehouse names, shipping fees, or transit times mentioned elsewhere on this page are general market information only and do not represent services offered by this website. How to Choose Among 5 Grill Types?
For everyday home use, a gas grill is the easiest option; for smoky charcoal flavor, go charcoal; for slow-cooked smoked meats with stable temperature control, choose a wood pellet grill. Ceramic grills (Kamado) hold heat the best, and electric grills are the best fit for balconies and apartments.
| Grill Type | Fuel | Characteristics | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas Grill | LPG, natural gas | Fast ignition, intuitive temperature control, easy cleanup | Everyday family use, weeknight dinners |
| Charcoal Grill | Charcoal, briquettes | Rich charcoal aroma, capable of high-heat direct grilling | Classic BBQ flavor, weekend gatherings |
| Wood Pellet Grill | Wood pellets | Auto-feed, stable temperature control, natural smoky flavor | Slow-cooked smoked meats, long cook times |
| Ceramic Grill (Kamado) | Charcoal | Thick ceramic walls hold heat well, wide temperature range | All-in-one cooking (grilling, smoking, baking) |
| Electric Grill | Electricity | No open flame, low smoke, simple to operate | Balconies, apartments, indoor ventilated areas |
Wood pellet grills and some higher-end gas grills need to be plugged in (for the controller and auger motor). US models are typically 120V/60Hz, close to Taiwan's 110V/60Hz, but always check the rating label on your specific model, and consult a licensed electrician if in doubt.
US-spec gas grills typically come with a US-standard regulator and hose fitting, which may not be compatible with Taiwan's household gas cylinder fittings. Before buying, make sure to confirm the fitting conversion and installation method, and have the work done by a licensed gas technician — never modify the gas piping yourself.
5 Major BBQ Grill Brands
Each American BBQ grill brand has its own strengths. Decide which grill type you need first, then check the lineup that brand offers for that type.
Weber (1893, Illinois, USA)
The most globally recognized BBQ grill brand. Its gas-powered Genesis and Spirit lines, and its charcoal Kettle and Smokey Mountain smoker, are all long-running classics. With comprehensive accessories and parts support, it is a safe choice from beginner to advanced.
Traeger (1985, Oregon, USA)
The pioneer brand of wood pellet grills, known for auto-feed and app-based temperature control. Its lineup ranges from the entry-level Pro series to the flagship Timberline, built around slow-cooking and smoking.
Pit Boss
Also focused primarily on wood pellet grills, with a Vertical Smoker in its lineup as well. Known in the wood pellet grill market for its value-for-money positioning.
Char-Broil
Offers both gas and charcoal grills, with a broad lineup and many entry-level models — a good fit for budget-conscious buyers or families buying their first BBQ grill.
Big Green Egg / Kamado Joe
The leading brands for ceramic egg-shaped grills (Kamado). Thick ceramic walls hold heat well with a wide temperature range, letting one grill handle direct grilling, slow smoking, and baking — a great fit for advanced enthusiasts.
Wood Pellets vs Charcoal: Choosing Your Fuel
Wood pellet flavors run from mild to strong roughly in this order: alder, apple, cherry, oak, pecan, hickory, mesquite. Wood pellets and charcoal imported into Taiwan are both subject to a 0% tariff.
Wood Pellet Flavor Chart
| Hickory | Classic, rich smoky flavor | Pork, chicken, ribs |
| Mesquite | The strongest smoky flavor | Steak, large cuts of red meat |
| Apple | Mild with a fruity sweetness | Pork ribs, chicken breast |
| Cherry | Sweet, fruity aroma, beautiful color | Pork, turkey |
| Pecan | Medium smoke, nutty undertone | All-purpose |
| Oak | Medium, balanced, does not overpower | All-purpose, brisket |
| Alder | The lightest flavor | Seafood, white fish |
- Wood pellets (compressed sawdust logs) fall under tariff code 4401.31.00.00-0 with a 0% tariff; the tariff code itself carries no import requirement code.
- Charcoal (other charcoal) falls under tariff code 4402.90.00.00-7 with a 0% tariff; bamboo charcoal (4402.10) and shell charcoal (4402.20) are likewise 0%.
- ⚠️ Unprocessed firewood, wood chips, and bark (4401.11 / 4401.12 / 4401.21, etc.) are subject to mandatory B01 quarantine, requiring compliance with the regulated commodity list published by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency — this is a different tariff code from compressed wood pellets, so do not conflate the two.
- Fuel is heavy and bulky, so shipping cost is a large share of the total; charcoal and some wood pellets are also available locally in Taiwan, so compare total landed cost before ordering.
How to Buy a BBQ Grill in Taiwan?
HowBridge only offers consolidated shipping from China (via our Shenzhen warehouse) to Taiwan — purchases from the US cannot be shipped back to Taiwan through our service. Below are three practical options.
① Taiwan Distributors & Retail Channels
Brands like Weber and Traeger have distributors and dealer networks in Taiwan, and are also commonly available at warehouse clubs and outdoor equipment stores. This comes with an official warranty, lets you inspect the actual unit in person, and for gas grills, the retailer can help confirm the fitting specifications — making it the most hassle-free option.
② Buy in the US and Arrange Your Own Import
After buying through a US retailer, you will need to arrange your own international shipping and customs clearance (HowBridge does not handle this leg). BBQ grills are large and heavy, so factor in both the freight cost and Taiwan-side taxes (see below) as part of your total cost, and for gas grills, also confirm fitting and inspection requirements.
③ Buy Grills & Accessories on Chinese E-commerce via HowBridge Shipping
Charcoal grills, wood pellet grills, and grilling accessories are available from brand-authorized stores on Taobao, JD.com, and Pinduoduo, and can be consolidated at our Shenzhen warehouse and shipped back to Taiwan. ⚠️ However, gas grills (gas-fueled) fall under tariff code MP1 (Mainland China goods conditionally permitted for import) and are not treated as general merchandise — always confirm feasibility with customer service before placing an order.
A note on oversized items: BBQ grills are large and heavy, both in volume and weight — pricing is based on volumetric weight, and Taiwan-side home delivery carries an additional oversize fee. Before shipping, confirm the packaging method and get a freight estimate from customer service. See our shipping cost calculation guide for details.
Taiwan Import Taxes & Requirements
The tax base is the dutiable value (CIF = goods value + international freight + insurance): Import duty = dutiable value × tariff rate; Business tax = (dutiable value + duty) × 5%; Trade promotion service fee = dutiable value × 0.04%, waived if under NT$100. BBQ grills fall under different tariff codes depending on fuel type, so the tariff rate differs accordingly.
| Item | Tariff Code | Duty | Import Requirements | Approx. Total incl. Business Tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gas BBQ Grill (gas-fueled) | 7321.11.00.00-5 | 6.8% | C02, MP1 | 12.1% |
| Charcoal / Wood Pellet Grill (solid fuel) | 7321.19.10.00-5 | 9% | — | 14.5% |
| BBQ Grill Parts | 7321.90.00.00-9 | 6.8% | — | 12.1% |
| Wood Pellets (compressed sawdust logs) | 4401.31.00.00-0 | 0% | — | 5% |
| Charcoal | 4402.90.00.00-7 | 0% | — | 5% |
| Stainless Steel Grilling Tools & Kitchenware | 7323.93.00.00-4 | 6.8% | C02 | 12.1% |
- C02: Some items under this tariff code are subject to mandatory import inspection announced by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), Ministry of Economic Affairs — not every product under the code is regulated; whether a specific item is covered depends on the commodity list published by BSMI.
- MP1: Mainland China goods conditionally permitted for import, which must comply with the "Summary Table of Regulations Governing the Conditional Permission of Importation of Mainland China Articles." If the summary table lists a special "MXX" code for the item, an import permit must be obtained from the International Trade Administration.
- B01: Import requires compliance with the regulated commodity list and quarantine requirements published by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (this applies to unprocessed firewood, wood chips, and bark — not to compressed wood pellets).
Sample Calculation (Hypothetical Figures)
Assume a wood pellet grill with a dutiable value of NT$40,000 (international freight included): Duty = 40,000 × 9% = NT$3,600; Business tax = (40,000 + 3,600) × 5% = NT$2,180; Trade promotion service fee = NT$16, waived since it is under NT$100 — total taxes and fees come to approximately NT$5,780.
- Express shipments with a dutiable value ≤ NT$2,000 are exempt from duty and business tax (customs may disallow this exemption if you exceed 6 shipments in a six-month period) — a BBQ grill will always exceed this threshold, so duty is unavoidable.
- International freight is included in the dutiable value for tax purposes; since a BBQ grill is large and heavy, this amount is often underestimated.
- Tariff codes and rates are determined by the official tariff rate lookup published by the Customs Administration, Ministry of Finance; customs may assess the dutiable value based on the information it obtains, so underreporting offers no real benefit.
