Cross-border shopping anti-fraud guide
Three situations account for most cross-border shopping losses: phishing sites impersonating brand stores, counterfeit goods, and sellers who vanish after payment. Three checks work best: (1) is the address the brand's official domain, (2) can the payment method be disputed afterwards (credit cards beat bank transfers and crypto), (3) how many reviews does the seller have and how old is the account. If you have already been defrauded, contact your card issuer for a chargeback immediately; in Taiwan you can also call the 165 anti-fraud hotline.
Taiwan Police 2026 statistics show cross-border shopping fraud rose 23%, with an average loss of NT$8,400 per case. Most scams are preventable if you know the signs and use the right protections.
8 common cross-border shopping scams
1Phishing sites that copy major brands
Method: Scammers create fake Apple, Sephora, or Costco sites with similar domains such as apple-shop.com or sephora-store.net. Deep discounts lure buyers, then goods never arrive.
2Counterfeit brands on marketplaces
Method: Listings claim genuine, parallel import, or export surplus, but ship replicas. Customs may destroy counterfeit goods, leaving the buyer with the loss.
3Seller disappears after payment
Method: New or low-rated sellers take payment, do not ship, and close the account. This is common on small sites and social channels.
4Swapped goods or empty boxes
Method: The seller provides a real tracking number, but the parcel contains paper, a brick, an empty box, or the wrong product.
5Credit card theft
Method: Card data entered on an unsafe site is stolen, then overseas charges or ATM withdrawals appear later.
6Fake logistics SMS or email
Method: After ordering, a fake carrier or Amazon message says your parcel is held and asks you to pay duty through a phishing link.
7Low-price bait plus extra fees
Method: A product is listed far below market price. After ordering, the seller asks for shipping, insurance, or verification fees off-platform.
8Fake support asking for remote access
Method: A caller pretends to be Amazon or Shopee support, says your order has a problem, and asks you to install TeamViewer or AnyDesk.

Safer payment ranking
Cards support chargeback rights. If scammed, dispute with the bank within 60 days. 3D Secure adds OTP protection.
PayPal Purchase Protection allows claims up to 180 days. Fees are higher, but small purchases get useful protection.
Mainland marketplace escrow is relatively safe, but cross-border recovery can be difficult.
These methods have no chargeback path. Use them only with long-term trusted suppliers.
Treat this as a scam signal. If a seller asks for these methods, stop the deal.

5 protection tools
1. Platform escrow
Taobao, JD, Amazon, and Rakuten can hold funds until receipt is confirmed. If a problem occurs, request a refund. Do not trade off-platform.
2. Warehouse inspection
Add inspection when goods reach our warehouse: photos, quantity check, item check, and early return support if issues appear.
3. Card purchase protection
Some premium cards include online shopping or overseas purchase protection. Check your card terms before buying high-value goods.
4. Protecting yourself on high-value items
HowBridge Logistics does not currently offer declared-value insurance. For high-value items, ask the warehouse for reinforced packing, split the order across several shipments, and keep payment records and unboxing video throughout.
5. 165 anti-fraud hotline
Call 165 when something looks suspicious. Staff can help judge the risk and guide reporting.
